“For I am not ashamed of the Gospel for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16
Praying with Presidents: Sharing Scripture in Moments of Need
Earlier this year I spoke at a memorial service in West Palm Beach, Florida and President Trump spoke just ahead of me. I always take the opportunity to pray with him but this time I was led to jot down a Bible verse on a bit of paper and give it to him.
It was an obscure verse I read in my morning devotion. It was Isaiah 54:17 which says, “…no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgement. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”
President Trump read the verse, smiled, thanked me and put it into his suit coat pocket (after the Secret Service checked it, of course). This obscure verse became more and more relevant to me as I observed his adversaries bring so many charges and indictments in multiple states attempting to take money and property from him and his family.
Isaiah 54:17 and the Power of God’s Protection
But on Saturday, July 13, when I watched an assassin shoot President Trump and three innocent people on television I was horrified. Like many I believe he is only alive because of God’s intervention. I was pleased that he later thanked God and gave Him credit for being alive. I believe the Word of God is power for those who believe and when Dr. Ben Carson spoke at the Republican Convention several days later and used Isaih 54:17 in his speech to the nation and the world I was amazed! God’s Word can travel!
The next verse I will put into President Trump’s pocket when we play golf again will be Psalm 34:7 which says, “When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.”
On the two year anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attack on America Karen and I were guests at the White House for dinner with President Bush and the First Lady. After dinner he took us down to the Oval Office and I took the opportunity to pray with him and also gave him a verse from Proverbs 11:14. “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
He was pleased and wrote it down and kept it. He said, “Tom, to be a good president of America takes genuine faith in God.”
After watching the attempt on President Trump’s life, Karen and I did not sleep well.
Because we know what it’s like to have our life threatened, be falsely charged, imprisoned, slandered, and money and property taken unjustly. But we believe there is the power of God for those who believe His word. And we thank God for protecting and vindicating us but also blessing us with this amazing life and ministry we enjoy here in Florida.
We thank God for your love and prayers that have sustained us through difficult but fruitful years serving a great God!
Gratefully yours,
Tom and Karen Randall
